If we were to describe LinkedIn as a colleague, we’d call them a prolific over-communicator. You know the type. The ones that copy you on all the work emails. The good news is, there’s a way to reduce the amount of emails you get from LinkedIn by adjusting your default settings in your LinkedIn profile’s settings.

The advantage of taking control of your notifications from LinkedIn is that you decide how you want to receive notifications. Each person’s preferences will be different. For example, if you’re a job seeker, you may like to receive the email alerts for new jobs.

How to Change Your LinkedIn Notifications Settings for Messages

Let’s use your notifications settings for Messages as an example of how to change your preferences. When you click on Messaging, from the list of Notifications you receive from LinkedIn, you will see the option below. You can specify if you want to receive In-app notifications, push notifications or emails from LinkedIn about your messages.

Understanding the Different Types of LinkedIn Notifications

In-app Notifications: Notifications appear at the top of your LinkedIn homepage from the My Network, Jobs, Messaging, or Notifications tabs. A number displayed on the icon is designed to alert you of pending notifications since your last visit. You can access your notifications when logged into your LinkedIn profile by clicking the Notifications icon at the top of the LinkedIn homepage.

Push Notifications: Push notifications are sent from LinkedIn to your mobile device.

Email Notifications: Email notifications are sent from LinkedIn to your primary email address.

Please note – updating your notifications settings can take at least ten minutes, but is an important step that will improve your LinkedIn user experience. It reduces the number of emails you receive.

Our preference is to only receive In-App LinkedIn notifications, rather than our inbox being filled up with LinkedIn emails every day! Some of our clients filter their emails from LinkedIn and check them each week. It’s up to you!
