How to Add Recommendations to Your LinkedIn Profile

by LinkedIn Profile, LinkedIn Training

In this article you will learn how to add recommendations to your LinkedIn profile.

A LinkedIn profile that presents the best version of you is incomplete without relevant recommendations from clients and colleagues. Recommendations are as powerful as a client testimonial for your business or professional referee for your career. Once you are confident your profile represents your goals for LinkedIn, you are ready to request recommendations from your connections.

How to Add Recommendations to your LinkedIn Profile

You can ask your 1st degree connection to write a recommendation of your work that you can display on your profile. Visit your connection’s LinkedIn profile, click on More and Request a recommendation.

How to Add Recommendations to your LinkedIn ProfileFill out the Relationship and Position at the time fields of the recommendations pop-up window, and click Next.

Include a personalised message with your request (see the example below) and change the text in the message field so it is more specific and relevant.

Click Send.

It may be worth also calling, messaging or emailing your connection to let them know you’d really appreciate them recommending you on LinkedIn.

The Value of Adding Recommendations to Your LinkedIn Profile

Recommendations are a way for others to say they have seen you demonstrate these skills and results, and they commend or acknowledge you for this. The best way to view recommendations is to consider this: you are asking people not to just take your word for the fact that you have certain skills and experience, you’re also providing evidence that others agree!

You have the option to feature your recommendations on your profile and viewers of your profile will view the recommendations you’ve received on your profile to see what others have to say about your work. Hiring managers and people searching for new customers and business partners prefer to work with people who come recommended by someone they know and trust.

When asking for recommendations, ask the most senior and influential people in the industries or roles that are most relevant or will have the most impact on other people viewing your profile. While there is no limit to the number of recommendations you can request or give, I tend to rotate my recommendations, depending on the current clients I am working with and who I am currently pitching to for business.

Remember – if you want to leverage the power of LinkedIn, then use your profile as your 24/7 online ambassador that reflects your unique career story and professional goals.

What to Write When You Want to Add Recommendations to Your LinkedIn Profile

When you get positive feedback via an email, or verbally, or via any other form of message, this is the ideal time to request a recommendation via your LinkedIn profile. After checking in via email with Cristina, a client I’d worked with on revising her LinkedIn profile for potential part time roles to complement her business, she sent me this response.

Hi Karen, I’m well, been meaning to message you and tell you our vision worked!
Via the government project, I met a consulting firm and they offered me a great job. I’m there part-time now and it feels fantastic, all about human-centred design with great clients.
I really feel the linked work we did helped!

After receiving the email from Cristina, I headed over to LinkedIn and sent this LinkedIn recommendation request via my LinkedIn profile.
