The LinkedIn Clean-Up You Didn’t Know You Needed
In this article, I’ll walk you through simple and practical steps – a LinkedIn clean-up – so you can side step the algorithm and significantly improve what you see via your notifications.
Many Australian professionals I work with want to use LinkedIn more strategically but find their feeds cluttered with irrelevant content.
Once you’ve tidied up your feed and defined a clearer intention for how you use LinkedIn, your time on the platform will become much more rewarding. You’ll start seeing industry news, thought-provoking insights, competitor intelligence, and valuable posts you can save, share privately or re-post – either through your profile or your LinkedIn Page.
How the LinkedIn Clean-Up Helps Maximise your Time
Improving your feed with a LinkedIn clean-up means you’ll spend more time engaging with content that aligns with your professional focus. It allows you to respond to and comment on posts that genuinely matter to you and the communities you serve. I like to think of it as ‘side-stepping the LinkedIn algorithm’ because it allows you to curate your own LinkedIn experience – one that reflects your interests, priorities, and professional goals.
Let’s dive in.
Unfollow Connections Whose Updates No Longer Serve You
By default, LinkedIn shows you updates from everyone you’re connected with. Over time, this can dilute the value of your feed. If you notice someone regularly sharing updates that are no longer relevant to you, unfollow them. You’ll remain connected and still be able to message them, but you won’t see their updates in your feed.
How to unfollow:
- Click the three dots (…) at the top-right of one of their posts.
- Select Unfollow.
- You can always return to their profile later and choose to Follow again.
This simple action helps remove noise from your home feed and makes space for more useful content. Importantly – the person you have unfollowed will not be notified that you’ve taken this action. If they are a first degree connection, you’ll still be connected to them.
Follow People You Want to Learn From and Ring Their Bell
The bell icon on a LinkedIn profile is the key to side stepping the LinkedIn algorithm. When you click Follow and then tap the bell, you can choose to be notified of all or just top updates from that person. If someone regularly shares valuable insights or industry news, this is a smart way to ensure their content appears in your notifications.
How to do it:
- Visit the profile.
- Click Follow or More (if you’re already connected) and then select Follow.
- Click the bell near their name or profile photo.
- Choose to be notified of all posts or just their top posts.
Check your Notifications before your home feed to see these updates – it’s a game changer! You don’t have to be connected to someone to follow them – this is especially helpful when keeping track of thought leaders, industry experts, or potential clients.
Follow Company Pages and Turn on Notifications
Company pages can also be followed and prioritised using the bell icon. If you want to stay across updates from organisations you admire or work with, this is a great option.
To follow a page like Think Bespoke:
- Type the organisation name into LinkedIn’s search bar.
- Click Follow on the page.
- Tap the bell in the top-right area of the page and choose your notification preferences.
Tip for Page Admins: If you manage a LinkedIn Page, you can also follow other Pages as your organisation. This helps build visibility within your industry or community.
Share Content Privately to Stay Connected and Add Value
Once your feed is more relevant, you’ll see a wealth of high-quality content that’s not only worth re-posting but also perfect for learning from, reacting to, and commenting on. Imagine a colleague publishing a thoughtful post or you coming across an article that aligns with a client’s current challenge. Instead of only engaging publicly via likes or comments, consider sharing that post privately through LinkedIn Messaging to further strengthen your professional connections.
Here’s how:
- At the bottom of the post, click Send.
- Type your connection’s name.
- Add a short, personalised message explaining why you thought of them.
- Click Send.
This small gesture can go a long way. It reinforces relationships, positions you as someone who actively listens and adds value, and keeps you meaningfully engaged with your network – without the constant pressure to produce your own content every time.
This is how you become a strategic content curator, rather than a prolific content creator.
The Benefits of The LinkedIn Clean-Up
Taking the time to clean up your LinkedIn home feed helps you:
- Reclaim control from the algorithm.
- Align your online activity with your professional brand and interests.
- Engage more meaningfully with the communities you care about.
- Reduce pressure to constantly create original content.
- Share useful updates that spark conversations and strengthen relationships.
Over time, LinkedIn becomes a place where you go to learn, connect, and contribute – on your own terms. Your LinkedIn feed is yours to curate. With a few simple adjustments, you can transform it into a source of relevant insight, industry trends, and content that supports your goals.
