Maximising LinkedIn for Thoughtful Leadership

by Client Stories, LinkedIn for Leaders

For many thoughtful leaders, LinkedIn does not need to become louder. It needs to become more intentional. This case study offers a refreshed look at how Karen Hollenbach helped a founder-led professional services business sharpen one leader’s thought leadership positioning on LinkedIn, introduce simpler business development rituals, and make better use of the credibility, consistency and perspective already present in her content.

Client: Founder and managing director of a specialist professional services consultancy, seeking to use LinkedIn more strategically for thought leadership and relationship-led business development.

This client had already built a respected business and a loyal client base. She was posting regularly on LinkedIn, using original imagery, reflective commentary and thoughtful observations drawn from her work and wider reading. But she had reached a point where she wanted to spend less time in the day-to-day of the business and use LinkedIn with greater purpose. She did not want a complex marketing machine. She wanted a clearer way to show up online as a trusted, guiding voice in her field.

The Starting Point

Before this work began, the foundations were already strong. The client had a recognisable voice, a steady posting habit, and a style of content that felt thoughtful, human and distinctly her own. She was already doing a lot right. Her network associated her with reflective questions, professional insight and a more considered tone than the harder-edged style she sometimes saw from others in her space.

What was missing was structure. Her posts were performing well, but there was no consistent system for turning profile views, post engagement and new followers into warm business development conversations. Several useful LinkedIn features were underused, including a profile newsletter, services page and more deliberate engagement with LinkedIn News and trending industry topics. Her offline activity was also stronger than her online system. She and her team were already attending events, participating in networks and showing up in the right rooms, but those activities were not yet being linked back into a steadier LinkedIn rhythm.

How Think Bespoke Helped

Karen structured the mentoring around The Elevate Map, using it as a way to clarify what the client wanted to be known for, refine how that showed up on LinkedIn, and connect her strong content habits to more intentional relationship-building.

A key part of the session was helping her articulate her thought leadership positioning more clearly. She did not want to be the loudest voice in her field. She wanted to be a trusted influence for senior decision makers. Someone who shares hard-won lessons, offers perspective, and quietly nudges leaders to consider what they may not yet have seen. That anchor concept became an important reference point. It helped clarify not only her profile direction, but also the tone of her future content and the purpose of a LinkedIn profile newsletter.

Karen also recognised that the client already had strong momentum in the Amplify phase of The Elevate Map. She was showing up consistently, writing in her own voice, and sharing content that was relevant, lateral and human. The goal was not to make her work harder. It was to help her work more strategically. One high-leverage recommendation was the introduction of a LinkedIn profile newsletter. This was positioned not only as a content asset, but as a relationship-building tool. Each new subscriber could become a warm contact, a future connection, and the beginning of a real conversation in the inbox.

The biggest practical shift came through business development rituals.

Karen introduced a simple “Thoughtful 15” rhythm: a short session each week focused not on posting, but on engagement and follow-up. These sessions included reviewing profile viewers, responding more thoughtfully to post engagement, taking part in relevant LinkedIn News conversations, and following up with new followers and newsletter subscribers in a warm, relational way. The emphasis was on low-friction, human interaction that makes it easier for the right people to move from passive attention to active connection.

Karen also helped the client become more selective about who counted as a genuine potential client. That meant defining clearer filters around location, seniority, role type and organisational fit, so she could spend less time collecting contacts and more time nurturing the relationships most likely to matter.

Beyond that, the session connected LinkedIn more intentionally to the offline world. Events, CEO groups, industry gatherings and referral networks were already part of the client’s business development ecosystem. Karen’s guidance helped turn these into a more connected system, where offline conversations could be strengthened through timely LinkedIn follow-up, ongoing visibility and lighter-touch relationship nurture between events.

Finally, the mentoring included tactical improvements to both the personal profile and the company page. Karen recommended refining the headline and About section to better reflect her positioning, activating profile features such as a custom button and services page, and using simple company-page rituals such as monthly follower invites and warm follow-up with new followers.

What Changed

The first shift was positional.

The client moved from a general sense that she wanted to be more visible on LinkedIn to a much clearer understanding of how she wanted to be perceived: as a trusted guide, a thoughtful industry voice, and a steady influence for senior decision makers. That kind of clarity makes content, engagement and business development decisions much easier.

The second shift was practical.

Instead of relying on good instincts alone, she now had a lighter, more repeatable set of rituals around profile views, post engagement, followers, subscribers and offline follow-up. The work became less abstract and more manageable. She did not need more content. She needed smarter habits around the content she was already creating.

The third shift was strategic.

LinkedIn became less of a broadcast channel and more of a relationship-led business development tool. The session gave her a clearer path to refine her profile, launch a LinkedIn newsletter, integrate online and offline networking, and support a six-month goal around new client growth without adding hours to her week.

What This Leader Learned about Maximising LinkedIn for Thoughtful Leadership

This case study reflects something Karen sees often with experienced founders and thought leaders.

The answer is not always more content.

Sometimes the real opportunity lies in clarifying your role in the conversation, using LinkedIn’s quieter features more well, and building a few steady rituals that help credibility turn into connection.

For this client, LinkedIn was already full of good raw material. What changed was the system around it. Her thought leadership became more clearly anchored. Her relationship-building became more intentional. And the platform began to support not only visibility, but the next stage of her leadership and business development more gently and more strategically.
