Your LinkedIn public profile URL is the web address people use to find your profile. It may seem like a small detail, but a clear, personalised URL is part of a professional and credible LinkedIn presence. It is easier to share, easier to remember and more polished when included in a biography, speaker profile, board application, proposal, email signature or resume.
For executive leaders and senior professionals, it is one more way to make your professional presence easier to find and recognise.
For organisations, encouraging visible leaders and subject-matter experts to use clear LinkedIn URLs can also support executive visibility, thought leadership and a more connected digital presence.
Why customise your LinkedIn profile URL?
When you first create a LinkedIn profile, LinkedIn may assign a URL containing a long string of numbers or letters. A customised URL is cleaner and easier to use.
For example:
linkedin.com/in/yourname
is generally more professional and easier to share than a longer automatically generated link.
A personalised public URL can be useful when you are:
-
adding LinkedIn to a resume, biography or board profile
-
sharing your profile with clients, collaborators or recruiters
-
including LinkedIn in a speaker introduction or conference programme
-
adding a profile link to an email signature
-
helping people find you after a meeting, referral or event
-
building a more consistent professional presence across your digital channels.
It is not a major search engine strategy on its own. But it removes friction and helps make your profile easier to recognise.
Choose a URL that will last
The strongest option is usually a simple variation of your name. This might include:
-
your first name and surname
-
your first initial and surname
-
your middle initial, where needed
-
a short professional variation of your name.
For most executive leaders and professionals, it is better to avoid adding a current employer, job title or campaign phrase to the URL.
Roles change. Organisations change. Your public URL should remain useful even as your career evolves.
For example, a URL based on your own name is usually more durable than one based on your current position or organisation.
How to customise your LinkedIn public profile URL
It is generally easiest to update your public profile URL from a desktop or laptop.
-
Click the Me icon at the top of your LinkedIn homepage.
-
Select View Profile.
-
On your profile page, click the edit icon beside Public profile & URL in the right-hand panel.
-
Under Edit your custom URL, click the edit icon beside your current profile URL.
-
Type the final part of your preferred URL.
-
Click Save.
LinkedIn may change the wording or layout slightly over time, but the public profile URL settings remain accessible through your profile settings.
LinkedIn’s current URL requirements
LinkedIn advises that a custom public profile URL:
-
can be between 3 and 100 characters long
-
can include letters and numbers
-
cannot include spaces, symbols, special characters or the word “LinkedIn”
-
is case-insensitive
-
is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
LinkedIn also limits how often you can change your URL. You can make up to five changes within six months, so choose carefully rather than updating it repeatedly.
What to do if your preferred URL is unavailable
Many common names are already taken. Try a simple variation rather than adding unnecessary wording.
You could consider:
-
adding your middle initial
-
reversing the order of your name
-
using an abbreviated first name
-
adding a professional identifier that will still make sense in the future.
Keep it readable. For example, adding a middle initial is usually a better choice than adding a long string of numbers, a current job title or an organisation name that may no longer be relevant later.
Check your public profile visibility
Customising your URL is useful only if your profile is visible in the way you intend. LinkedIn allows you to control whether your public profile appears in search engines and which parts of your profile can be viewed by people who are not signed in to LinkedIn.
Review these settings if you want your profile to be easier to find through Google or other search tools, or if you need more control over what appears publicly.
For some leaders, a public profile supports visibility, speaking opportunities, client confidence and industry reputation.
For others, particularly in sensitive roles or situations, more limited visibility may be appropriate.
The right setting depends on your circumstances.
Keep it consistent across your professional presence
Once you have customised your LinkedIn URL, use the same version wherever you share it. You may include it in:
-
email signatures
-
biographies and speaker profiles
-
board applications
-
proposals and capability documents
-
conference materials
-
business cards
-
personal websites
-
media profiles.
A consistent URL makes it easier for people to find you and reinforces the sense that your professional presence is current and considered.
A small detail that supports a stronger profile
A customised LinkedIn URL will not replace a clear headline, well-written About section or current Experience section. But it is one of those small details that contributes to the overall impression.
For executive leaders, professionals and visible subject-matter experts, a strong LinkedIn presence is built through many simple decisions made well.
A clear public profile URL is one of them.
